The Story

Despite its excellent condition, we are pleased to introduce this wakizashi at a very affordable price.

The entire blade is well-polished and in sound condition with almost no flaws, and the shirasaya is also in very good shape. The jigane features itame with some mokume mixed in, displaying active hamon patterns like chikei and yubashiri. The hamon itself is a deep, flowing gunome with some kochoji and koguno-me mixed in. Hataaki like ashi are also visible, creating a dynamic yet somehow refined appearance. The nakago bears the name Kuninobu.

While Kuninobu, the second son of Hasebe Kunishige, is well-known, the Kuninobu who forged this piece is a namesake swordsmith active in the late Edo period in Ugo Province (present-day Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture). His real name was Mitsuda Mosuke. He was a disciple of Miyazaki Mokichi Kunishige and is said to have been a swordsmith commissioned by the Yashima domain. The swords he forged are often characterized by their straightforwardness and sharp cutting edge.

This piece is highly recommended for a wide audience, from beginners looking to learn about Japanese swords to enthusiasts with a considerable collection.
