The Story

We proudly present this wakizashi, accompanied by certificates from two appraisal agencies.

It is in excellent condition, with no flaws such as scratches, rust, or chipped edges. The jigane features a ko-itame grain with jini-e, and yubashiri is visible. The hamon features irregularly spaced gunome, creating a dynamic pattern. Engraved on the nakago are “Shimofusa Daijo Fujiwara Kanemasa” on the sashio-mote side and “Echizen Ju” on the sashiu-ra side.

Kanemasa was a swordsmith active around the Enpo era (circa 1673) of the Edo period and was the grandson of the fifth-generation head of the prestigious Seki Kanenori school. Kanemasa further developed the “Toran Hamon” pattern, which was devised by Sukehiro in Osaka at that time, refining it into a unique, undulating hamon.

In June 1982, Nihon Token Hozonkai certified this wakizashi as an authentic work by Kanemasa and issued a certificate of authenticity. Furthermore, in February 2025, the Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords similarly certified this as an authentic work by Kanemasa and issued a Hozon certificate of authenticity.

The koshirae is in the Uchigatana style, crafted using modern materials, which further enhances the visual impact of Kanemasa’s powerful blade. Considering all factors—quality, condition, and the swordsmith’s rank—this is an absolute bargain.
