The Story

A very beautiful tanto koshirae equipped with a kozuka has just arrived. The signature is engraved as having been made by Suketomo in February 1854. Suketomo, whose real name was Naoe Shingoro, and his father was a swordsmith named Sukemasa. Suketomo is also said to have been a disciple of Suishinshi Masahide, one of the leading swordsmiths of the late Edo period. Suketomo, together with his father, Sukemasa, demonstrated swordsmithing before Tokugawa Nariakira, the real father of Yoshinobu Tokugawa, the 15th shogun. He also presented sharp katanas to the 12th shogun, Ieyoshi Tokugawa, 14 times over a two-year period. Nariakira also possessed the skill of making katanas and had a swordsmith name of Rekko. And in 1839, Suketomo was taught the secret Nariakira technique called Yagumo Kitae directly from Rekko himself.

This piece is a very well-preserved dagger with no flaws, dents, or chips of any kind. The surface of the sword is a little cloudy, but the hada and hamon can be seen brightly. The hada is itame, and hataraki such as chikei can be seen. The suguha hamon with tightened nie is very elegant and has yuvashiri and kinsen, which are worth seeing.

All the fittings of koshirae are from that time and have not deteriorated much, so we can assume that they have been kept very carefully until now. The tsuba and fuchikashira have fine workmanship and gold inlays, suggesting that they belonged to a feudal lord. The kozuka is in perfect condition with original equipment.

Tozando is offering this very elegant yet powerful short sword made in the late Edo period of turmoil at a very reasonable price. Do not miss this opportunity.
