Tanto - Shigeyuki - NBTHK Tokubetsu Kicho Certificate - Tanto/Shirasaya Koshirae - Ubu Nakago - Shinto Era - Mie 2329

This piece is a set of tanto (daggers) with excellent engraving on both sides as well as excellent preservation of the sword blade.

The overall condition of the swords is very clean, but there is a 3mm wide fukure-like mark on the sashiura side about 8cm from the hamachi. There is also a 5mm wide kitae-ware on the mune. Jigane has itame mixed with mokume and also hataraki such as yubashiri and chikei. Hamon has suguha mixed with notare, with kognome fucused in places.

On the sashiomote side, Kusa-no-kurikara are engraved. Kurikara, also called Kenmakiryu, represents a dragon coiled around a sword. Since this sword is a weapon held by Acala (Fudo Myo-o), a sword blade with this type of engraving is meant to drive away evil spirits and ward off bad luck.

The engraving on the sashiura side features the Sanskrit characters representing Acala and the lucky charm gomahashi, which represents Fudo Myo-o Gomahashi are iron chopsticks used in esoteric Buddhist rituals to pray for the blessings of Fudo Myoo. This chopstick is represented by two narrow grooves engraved on the blade.

The name Fujiwara Shigeyuki is engraved on the nakago. Shigeyuki, like Kotetsu, was a swordsmith from the Bungo region (present-day Oita Prefecture), representing the Kanbun period of the Edo era, and came from the so-called Fujiwara Takada family. In 1977, the Japanese Society for Preservation of Art Swords recognized this work as Tokubetsu Kicho and issued a certificate for it.

Koshirae is very well preserved, and everything except for the sageo is of its time. The red nashiji lacquered scabbard is equipped with both kozuka and kogai and is a complete package.

This set is not only for appreciation but also as a luck bringer, which has been passed down from generation to generation since the Edo period and is highly valued.
