Katana - Toshitsuna - NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate - Uchigatana/Shirasaya Koshirae - Ubu Nakago - Shinshinto Era - Shizuoka 13041

This piece is a katana by Toshitsuna, who was active in Inshu (present-day Tottori Prefecture) in the late Edo period. Toshitsuna, whose real name was Iwamoto Saibei, was apprenticed to Hamabe Minryushi Toshizane. While he made high quality katanas, there are very few surviving pieces, making them very rare and valuable.

This sword has no defects such as flaws, rust, hagire, or dents, and is in a very excellent state of preservation. It is decorated with gunome hamon with open koshi on the koitame hada, and work such as chikei and yubashiri can be seen on the jichu. Active hataraki such as ashi can also be seen on the blade. The condition of preservation is very good but there are some small scuffs in places, and there is a white spot about 20 cm from the cut end of the sashi omote. The boshi is in notare and returns to nakamaru. The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords has recognized this piece as a katana especially worthy of preservation for posterity and issued a Tokubetsu Hozon certificate of authenticity.

Koshirae is equipped with both uchigatana and shirasaya. The shirasaya features sayagaki by Sato Kanzan, a leading expert in the study of Shinto period swords. The fuchigashira, menuki, tsuba, etc. are equipped with those of the period. The scabbard is lacquered in the style of Shinobue with mother-of-pearl shells, and the area around the kurigata is engraved with a sentan carving.

This is an excellent, well-preserved katana that has been authenticated by Tokubetsu Hozon and is offered at a relatively affordable price. This is an excellent opportunity for you to acquire an authentic katana that actually existed during the time the samurai lived!
