The Story

Although unsigned, this katana is in relatively good condition and was certified as a work by Jumyo by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords in December 2023.

The condition shows no nicks or rust, and the blade is sharpened throughout, allowing the jigane and hamon to be clearly seen and appreciated. The jigane is a well-kneaded itame pattern, and chikei and yubashiri are also visible. The hamon features a choji pattern with relatively long ashi, arranged at regular intervals. The heads of the ashi are flattened, creating a unique pattern reminiscent of a saw blade. The nakago bears sujikai type file marks and is unsigned. Based on the original mekugi-ana position, it is estimated that this blade originally measured around 75 centimeters.

In December 2023, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords authenticated this work as being forged by Jumyo, active during the Shinshinto period. Jumyo belonged to a renowned Mino Province swordsmith lineage, active from the late Kamakura period through the Shinshito period at the end of the Edo period.

Jumyo, meaning “long life,” was considered highly auspicious. Consequently, it was greatly prized by the warrior class as a celebratory gift, a present, or a ceremonial sword presented at coming-of-age ceremonies. Incidentally, while commonly referred to as Jumyo in the sword world, the original smith's name is read as Toshinaaga.

Tozando offers this katana, complete with its highly auspicious certificate of authentication, at an affordable price.
