The Story

A stunning, nearly flawless tanto with a mother-of-pearl inlaid scabbard has arrived.

The blade is in excellent condition, having been fully polished, and can be described as virtually flawless. The jigane features a well-tempered itame grain, with traces of chikei visible. The hamon is a slightly notare-style sugaha with a bright nioguchi. The name “Masayoshi” is engraved on the nakago.

Masayoshi was a master swordsmith belonging to the “Kai-Mihara” school, active in Bingo Province during the Tenmon era of the late Muromachi period. This group of Mihara-school swordsmiths was known as Kai-Mihara because they engraved the character for “shell” (Kai) on their blades. Works of the Mihara school retain a strong influence of Yamato-den swords throughout the various periods, and are characterized by their expertise in creating Suguha hamon.

The scabbard features a beautiful green mother-of-pearl inlay that catches the eye. The gold-brown silk tsuka-ito has discolored over time, and this lends it a distinctive vintage charm.

It is equipped with a kotsuka and is in excellent condition.

If you're looking for a Tanto with beautiful koshirae, this is one of our top recommendation.
