The Story

We are proud to present this katana from the Koto period, which is in excellent condition and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

The entire blade has been polished and is virtually flawless; both the ji and the ha are superbly formed, making this a sound piece. The jigane features itame with some mokume mixed in, and exhibits active patterns such as yubashiri and chikei. The hamon features a flat tip on the gunome, giving it a Hakomidare-style appearance, with well-defined ashi. The blade is engraved with a bohi.

Although the nakago is unsigned due to suriage, in March 1996, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords certified this work as a piece by the Owari-seki school of swordsmiths and issued a preservation certificate recognizing it as a piece of high value worthy of preservation for future generations. The Owari-seki school refers to a group of swordsmiths who migrated from Mino Province to Owari Province and flourished there, producing master craftsmen such as Ujifusa, Nobutaka, and Masatsune.

This piece is imbued with the distinctive presence characteristic of Koto’s work. In addition to the shirasaya, the sword comes with Koshirae fittings for an uchigatana. The handle is wrapped in brown pure silk using the tsumami-maki style, and the scabbard features an elegant lacquer finish with a hirumaki pattern around the kurigata section. The fittings, which exude a rugged samurai atmosphere, make this a masterpiece that never ceases to captivate the viewer.

This is your opportunity to acquire a Koto-period work in excellent condition. Do not miss out.
