Wakizashi - Kunikiyo - NBTHK Tokubetsu Kicho/NBHK Certificate - Uchigatana Koshirae - Ubu Nakago - Shinto Era - Saitama 42420

This wakizashi was crafted during the Kanbun period in the early Edo era and holds certificates from two sword appraisal institutions.

The blade, though old-polished, is well-maintained overall and in excellent condition with almost no flaws. The jigane features a well-packed ko-itame grain with prominent jihada and visible yubashiri. The hamon is suguha with konie appearing in places. The nakago is engraved with a chrysanthemum crest and the name Yamashiro no Kami Kuniyoshi.

While both the first and second generations of Kunikiyo are renowned for producing particularly outstanding works, this piece bears "ichimonji", Kanji character representing one, engraved beneath the chrysanthemum crest, identifying it as the work of the second-generation Kunikiyo. The second-generation Kuniyoshi's father was the first-generation Kuniyoshi, son of the third-generation Sukemune, and was also a disciple of the renowned Kunihiro.

The fittings are original period pieces, though the tsukamaki appears to be from the modern era. The black cowhide tsukaito is wrapped in tsumamaki style. The metal fittings are unified with a dragon motif.
