Katana - Munehiro - NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate - Uchigatana/Shirasaya Koshirae - Ubu Nakago - Shinshinto Era - Mie 8479

We have received a very special Japanese sword made in 1864 that comes with a certificate of authenticity of Tokubetsu Hozon.

The sword is extremely well preserved, with no flaws, dents, or chips. The polishing is excellent and the hada and hamon are very visible and enjoyable to appreciate. Itame's hada is well packed and active hataraki such as yubashiri and chikei can be seen. Hamon has long ashi gunome that are burned all over and have beautiful nioi.

On the nakago, tairyuusai munehiro korewo tsukuru is engraved on the surface and ganji gannen juichigatsubi on the reverse. Munehiro's work is extremely sharp, and he has been a popular swordsmith since his time, but even today his popularity has not waned; in fact, it has become even more popular.

Munehiro was born in 1818 in Oshu Shirakawa (present-day Fukushima Prefecture) as the son of Ono Heizo, and in 1848 he was chosen by the Doi family of the Koga domain to be the domain's exclusive swordsmith, and four years later he moved to Edo by order of the domain and became a student of Koyama Munetsugu. He continued to make swords into the Meiji era (1868-1912), but no works were seen after the sword abolition ordinance, and he died on January 23, 1883 (Meiji 16). The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords has authenticated this work as a sword especially worthy of preservation for future generations by Tokubetsu Hozon and issued a certificate for it.

The koshirae are equipped with metal fittings of the period. The tsuba with a deer motif is particularly impressive. The tsuka cord, made of pure silk, is wrapped in the tsumami-maki style. The scabbard has been kizami-finished at an angle to give it a luxurious look.
