Katana -Masatsugu - NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate - Uchigatana/Shirasaya Koshirae - Ubu Nakago - Shinshinto Era - Tokyo 34784

This piece is a katana made by Masatsugu, the son of the second Suishinshi Masahide. When he was thirteen years old his grandfather and father died, and their pupil, Taikei Naotane, became his de facto master. 

As a result, he took over the original Suishinsi family, but his style is similar to Naotane's. He died in March 1860 at the age of 47. He was a master artist who created many masterpieces, although not many of his works are known.

This katana features a kogunome hamon with itame hada mixed with togariba. The preservation of the sword blade is very excellent and beautiful. There is a minute spot-like flaw on the sashiomote side, about 15 cm from the habakimoto, but it is not fatal that would lower the value. His name is engraved on the ridge of the nakago, which is also characteristic of him. Because of its excellent state of preservation, the NBTHK has evaluated this sword for special preservation value and has issued a certificate of authenticity for it.

The tsukamaki is wrapped with a brown cord of pure silk in the style of a tsumamaki. The fuchikashira set and menuki are decorated with a dragon pattern. The plain round tsuba is trimmed in gold and is simple yet elegant. The scabbard is a powerful taki-nuri.
